I’ve never been a big fan of racing games based upon popular franchises. I’ve always preferred when it is based upon real people, or new characters. However, Transformed tries to break away from the simple formula, so the game is actually really fun.
I’ll be playing this on the PC. I’ve heard the 3DS and Vita versions are different. But, I am not sure, as I do not own these versions.
The plot of this game? It’s a racing game; so the plot is very simple. You are racing against other Sega characters (for some reason). Win. That is the whole plot. The plot may not be as amazing as the plot in The Walking Dead, but what is?
Graphically speaking, the game looks beautiful. It is a mix between cartoons, toon shading and realism. It is made in such a way, that the graphics will hold up in 5 years, but it doesn’t require a powerful GPU (it only requires a video card with 256MB of memory).
The gameplay is very solid. When you are just playing the game, you don’t pay attention to the other characters. They all have different skills, so one character will never win all the races. You will never lose to unfair deaths; when you do lose, it is usually your fault.
The gimmick of this game is that you can change your vehicle. Sounds normal, doesn’t it? This is true, but in gimmick is that you do it during the race. So, mid-race, you’ll go from a motorbike to a boat. There are more combinations as well.
The music are remixes from the various franchises. For instance, in Sunshine Coast, there is a zone called Coastal Cruise. This plays a remix of Toot-Toot Sonic Warrior (also Green Hills Zone in Sonic 2 for the Master System and Game Gear). I also thought I heard the theme of Sonic R in there, but I can’t be sure. Anyway, the tunes are pretty catchy, though they are obscured by the noise of the car engine.
The level design is on par with Sonic Generations. This can be a bad thing and a good thing. If you like multiple paths, then this game is full of small varied routes. If you want a map that consists of a circle, you may not like this.
The controls are very good. I’ve only got to play it on a keyboard, but it controls really well for a console game ported to PC.
The final verdict? This game is a great racing game, and you should check it out. It is fun to play, and you’ll start playing, realize it is midnight and that you spent your entire day on a video game from Sega.
